Ms Kelly’s 5th and 6th class girls engaged in an Art and Design Project whereby they created Fairy Doors for display at Moate Railway Station, in a designated area to be known as the ‘Fairy Station’. The project was completed in conjunction with the Railway Station Conservation group who sourced the materials and displayed the doors, and Moate Men’s Shed , who cut out the Fairy Doors from pieces of Recycled Wood.
The girls were involved in all stages of the project – they first drew their own designs for the fairy doors, choosing the Door template they preferred. They prepared the cut out doors with primer, and allowed to dry before painting their designs onto them . As many of the designs contained fine details, the painting was intricate work and required a steady hand, but we were all delighted with the finished results. A final varnishing to make the doors weatherproof was all that was left to do before they were fixed in their final home.
The project was entered in The Westmeath County Council Chairman’s Eco Schools awards and was awarded joint second place – well done to all involved.
